ABOUT CLEMENTINA VAN DER WALT
INSTALLATION OF 10 CERAMIC VESSELS
HANDBUILT TERRA COTTA WITH SLIPS AND UNDERGLAZES
“This group depicts the exploration of two-dimensional expressive surfaces on a three-dimensional form.
The shapes are formal, classical shapes which provide both a limitation and a contrast to the painterly surfaces.
A combination of early 20th Century abstract painters like Miro, Malevich, Kandinsky and mid-century British and American painters, as well as the American Abstract expressionist movement in the US form much of the inspiration referencing this work.
A long period of lockdown during Covid 19 has led to some personal soul searching and introspection. Working haptically and intuitively this is reflected in the colour and mark making on the surfaces.
I envisage the installation representing the 10 pieces spaced randomly – below table height – as witnesses, posed for reflection”
