The objects Clare Menck chooses to paint have a characteristic quirkiness to them and speak of a world of personal associations. In one of her solo exhibitions, Clare invites the viewer to explore her inner world in terms of these domestic ‘fetishes’ that she fondles with her paintbrush.

I like to call my landscapes “housescapes”, because most often they represent typical Platteland houses, sometimes derelict, often with the shutters closed, always without people. I seldom paint landscapes without some building or man-made structure becoming the main focus of the painting. I have a definite preference for street corners, on the one hand, and the drama of the disappearing road is often enhanced with large projected shadows in the foreground. On the other hand, I also find the classical compositions that result from representing a building or other subject “head-on” very rewarding.
