Carl is one of South Africa’s most respected and individual sculptors and his pieces are represented in many public collections. He primarily works with found wood and bone and much of his material is dragged from ancient riverbeds. In this magnificent work he has drawn on inspirations that include the Japanese artist, Hokusai

“I work like the automatic artists of the Surrealist movement in that I trust my subconscious to generate ideas. The emphasis is on “magic, accident, irrational, symbols and dreams”. Like the Rorschach (ink blot) test, the material often suggests images and sometimes presents them in an unusual way. The image made depends ultimately upon what lies in the subconscious, elements of chance and the spirit of the times.” CR

“Carl’s work is playfully magical, its strength derives from sound craftsmanship and an ability to coax imagery of great subtlety and humour from what to others is mere detritus. This is no mean feat.” – Brendan Bell, Curator, Tatham Art Gallery, Pietermaritzburg.
