Growing up surrounded by the splendour of the Overberg Rentia Retief found a special sense of solitude in the landscape. This same solitude drove her to question her place within the landscape which she so dearly loves and has been the theme of her latest offering of works. ‘Drawing is a tactile process of applying dust to paper, as it depends on the sense of touch to imbue a physical significance in the act.’ – Rentia Retief With wide reaching interests from classical music to running, riding to travelling, Retief uses drawing and illustration as a means of expressing and connecting the different inspirational aspects she draws from these diverse interests.
Retief also is an active member of the Stellenbosch art scene, often taking part in student drawing projects such as Draw Maw as well as being involved in aspects of the ‘Last Thursdays’ initiative. Recently graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Stellenbosch, Retief is now furthering her studies as she undertakes an Honours Degree in Illustration.
