“I work mainly with oil paints on canvas or anything that is a drawing-based medium. I like the way you can record an instant observation or doodle away your unconscious thoughts and ideas. My inspiration comes from the world around me – I love absorbing my surroundings. I simply comment on life.”

Cape Town based artist, painter and printmaker, Aviwe Plaatjie, born on the 19th June 1988, has been drawn to the visual arts since childhood. His interests were encouraged by his mother and her boss, who took him to part-time art classes. In 2010, Aviwe joined Good Hope Arts Studios as a self-taught painter and later on attended a mentorship programme at VANSA for three months, where he was introduced to linocut printing. He has become known for his multi-layered colour linocut prints and his oil portraits of people from his community, on abstract backgrounds with detailed patterns based on clothes that his sitters dress in.

Aviwe’s work has found an active, interested market and his work is being bought by private collectors and public curators.

“Aviwe Plaatjie paints people in his community, people he is familiar with. These portraits appear to gaze back at us.”
