Francois Viljoen, a South African born artist, now lives in the south-west part of Baden Württemberg, Germany. In many ways, arts influenced and marked his life from the start. He was in a school that focused solely on academics and sport with no art classes.

This was quite frustrating for Viljoen, but then the creative process, especially drawing, became a passion and big interest in his teenage years. He then started to draw, more and more.

“It was like finding my call in life and meaning… Like bringing order to chaos, soul-wise.”

Even as a teenager he communicated his experiences and understanding of life in graphics and sculptures. Francois paints mostly in oil, but also acrylic sculpts with ceramic and plasticine clay and plaster, casts in bronze or resin, and draws in many different media.

The inspiration for The Bronze Bowl and Vessel collection comes from a historical tradition where in many cultures, artistic vessels and bowls are fashioned using bronze. For example, the “Singing Bowls” (Tibet, Japan, Nepal, etc.), the bronze bowls from the Ming dynasty, bowls/vessels from ancient Greece and Roman times to bronze bowls with Egyptian motives (found in 1849) in northern Iraq. Viljoen’s own Bronze Bowl/Vessel Collection features mostly “less familiar animals”, each with its own little story and design.

The method he applies when producing bronze bowls and sculptures is the “lost wax casting method”. (a 3000-year-old technique). This intensive technique and process are done by highly skilled people. The earliest examples of bronze vessel/bowls art are objects found in southern Israel and belong to the Chalcolic period (about 4000 BC). Despite the existence of perhaps modern CAD and 3D printers, there is no other “hands-on” method today, producing the same amazing results.

Much of the artist’s earlier art influences comes from the Romanticism and Symbolism movements.

A recent and new theme Viljoen started to work on and explore, are the global information age and its influence on common life and individual life today.
