‘THE LANDSCAPES’ – ERIK LAUBSCHER, 28 OCT 2017 – 07 JAN 2018
The Landscapes – A selection of paintings from 1946 – 2012
This major exhibition focuses on one of South Africa’s finest abstract artists and his recurring examination of the South African landscape. Drawing on works over a 50 year period, ‘The Landscapes’ will exhibit works which have never been seen before and will include large scale, finished oils and smaller preparatory sketches and drawings.
Erik Laubscher’s career is well documented – from his early years at Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town in the 1940’s to his studies in London and Paris and his inclusions in the Sao Paulo and Venice Biennales. Laubscher described the challenge he set himself as “creating the illusion of the landscape having continuing vastness and the painting being part of the whole, instead of something complete and contained”.
