‘GHOST IN THE MACHINE ‘ – RICHARD SMITH, 02 NOV – 22 DEC 2017

With a career spanning nearly 50 years and over 40 exhibitions both locally and internationally, Richard Smith will be presenting his 18th solo exhibition, Ghost in the Machine, at EBONY/CURATED Cape Town this November.

Richard Smith began his artistic career as a political cartoonist in the 1970’s and was the Standard Bank Cartoonist of the year in 1980 and 1984. He began painting in the mid-’80s following his residency at The Cité International des Artes in Paris. Smith refers to his paintings as accidental, allowing the act of painting to be foremost while form and content are secondary. The human form has been a recurring subject for the artist and his paintings hint at elements, influences and inspirations from a wide variety of artists yet at the same time retaining a unique and richly layered visual irreverence. A fearsome self-critic, paintings take months, even years to appear and in his own words he wants ‘ the brush to spend as little time as possible on the canvas’
