Peter Dean most aptly called himself ‘an interpreter of reality into fantasy and back again’. Although born in Berlin, Germany, Peter Dean and his family escaped to New York in the 1939, fleeing from the Nazi occupation. From a young age Dean was aware of the social injustice inherent in the world and much of his more well-known works carry the heavy weight of apoplectic social satire. Having studied geology at the University of Wisconsin, Dean was also harboured a love for nature and, although lesser known, his intense landscape paintings talk both to this love as well as his interest in abstract expressionism.
