Presence

Solo Exhibition

24.07.24 - 31.08.24

EBONY/CURATED Cape Town

Orly Rabinowitz’s second solo exhibition with EBONY/CURATED unveils the artist’s latest body of work and weaves a richly textured narrative on her connection to both our external and internal landscapes. Surrounded by the stark beauty of the Namibian terrain in her early years and enriched by a career dedicated to teaching art, Rabinowitz's journey culminates in this, her latest reflection on light and darkness, both literal and metaphorical.

‘Presence’ contemplates Rabinowitz’s ongoing exploration of the unseen: seeking to uncover connections between the personal and the communal, the known and the enigmatic, each piece acts as a gateway to a world where atmosphere and emotion intertwine, where the silence and solitude of her early years resound in the harmony of each charged brushstroke.

Rabinowitz's artistic process is a testament to the transformative power of painting. Each canvas becomes a tapestry of emotions, thoughts, and questions—layered reflections on self-discovery and the complexities of being in our world. Her paintings feature scarified marks that elevate colours from the canvas and serve as metaphors for life's distinct cycles—the creative journey found within all seasons. Rabinowitz shares:

These new paintings emerged through a dialogue between materials and ideas, gestures and emotions, quiet meditation and extreme physical exertion, experimentation and elimination. The context being the beauty of nature surrounding my studio and the dire conflict in the world, which became very personal. For me the presence of each painting manifests itself by revealing an underlying life force that pulsates to the surface, transforming over time. This energy gives form to the wonders of life and the joy of the painting process.

This exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the interplay between tangible and intangible realms, where temporal textures and movements of paint mirror the migrations of people across landscapes. It is an exhibition that speaks to hope amidst fractured peace, where Rabinowitz's intuitive flow state gives form to feeling and acts as a tribute to the enduring power of art to excavate and distil the essence of our singular yet shared human experience.
