Kaloki Nyamai was born in Kitui, Kenya and works in Nairobi where he studied at The Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts.
Fascinated by his ancestors and the space in between the physical and spiritual realm, Nyamai’s works explore the parallels between the past and the present. Nyamai bases much of his research on stories told to him by his grandmother; the stories about her past and the past of her mother.
Nyamai works in a number of mediums, creating works on canvas, board and metal. He also works as an installation artist. Nyamai’s work questions the repetitive nature of human behavior and positions these questions within the constructs of power.
