Baynes, Warren

Artwork by Warren Baynes

As a Capetonian born into middle-class suburbia during the mid-80’s, Baynes became increasingly interested in social identities, most recently, the pseudo-masculine role that gangs fore fill in communities battling with fewer employment opportunities, substance and alcohol abuse, as well as domestic abuse.

Unorthodox offers viewers a portal into the world of crime, punishment and rehabilitation for offenders at Drakenstein Amateur Boxing Club. Boxing, for these prisoners, is a way out from the indoctrination of South African gang culture and violence and often offers the prisoners an alternative for of expression and masculine identity that remains powerfully strong and physical but not harmful to their futures.  Furthermore, it creates camaraderie, camaraderie based on hard work, determination, respect and responsibility.
